Kansas Eats

Description

Golden fields of grain still alternate with roaming livestock and dairy farms in Kansas, an important producer of wheat, corn, beef and a range of other comestibles. For the hungry connoisseur of good eats, however, there’s cause to kick up your heels over more than just bread and burgers, the Barbeque dishes for which Kansas City (both sides of the state line) has become famous for one, specialty foods with European roots for another.

Some of the best known barbeque pits can be found in the large metropolitan Kansas City area, whether you’re looking for delectable baby back ribs or flavorful burnt ends. While many BBQ hot spots are located on the Missouri side of the river there’s still a selection within Kansas lines to choose from before meandering on to drink a pint of Wag’s Wheat or Brother Benedict’s Bock at one of the Granite Food and Brewery locations. While you’re in the area, also look for savory ethnic sausages at places like Krizman’s House of Sausage, where smoked Polish is a best seller.

Beyond the big city find smaller farm towns with a variety of specialty food items up for tasting, from fresh cheese at Alma Creamery in Alma to elderberry wine made by Wyldewood Cellars near Witchita and elk jerky from a Kansas elk breeder. Seasonally, seek out local farmers markets for a taste of Kansas sweet corn, plump tomatoes and green beans.
