Start of the trail for wagons bound west and hometown of President Truman, Independence, Missouri, is well-endowed with historic attractions including covered wagon tours through the old part of town.
From this stretch of the river, often called "the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas," rafters area treated to inspiring views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Cotopaxi Cliffs. The bighorn sheep which gave the canyon its name can still often be seen scampering along the canyon floor. Moderate rapids like Wake-Up, Sharks Tooth, Double Dip and Maytag await rafters in the eastern stretch of the Parkdale segment, as the Arkansas continues its descent towards the plains.
Parkdale raft trips put in about 20 miles east of Salida, near the tiny town of Cotopaxi.
