Start of the trail for wagons bound west and hometown of President Truman, Independence, Missouri, is well-endowed with historic attractions including covered wagon tours through the old part of town.
Moffat Road was once an old railroad grade, and today is a rough 2WD road. It used to connect over the Continental Divide to Winter Park, but it is now closed at the Needles Eye Tunnel due to collapse. A self-guided auto tour booklet from the Rollins Pass Restoration Association is available at the Boulder Forest Service office for $1.
